Tuesday Guilty Pleasure

So when I was little, I wanted long hair like Crystal Gayle.  Hey, it was the last 1970s!  So much that I wanted to change my name to Crystal.   I hated my last name so I wanted to change it to Grant, my mother’s last name.  Crystal Grant.  Hmm.  My mom wasn’t having it.  She said no on Crystal, but that I could change my last name to hers if I really wanted (stop – think about it…).  Well, we all know that sharing the name of a Christian pop singer wasn’t the direction I was headed, even at that young age.

Anyhoo.  I still have the 45 of Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue . Here’s a classic performance that also – as only the 1970s could – personifies the era.

Summer 1987

It’s possible I may dance just like this still when this comes on the iPod.

Yes, it’s on my iPod.  Got a problem with that?  AND Lost in Emotion.  So there.

Bonus…these similarly-fresh-faced-and-synchronized-and-shoulder-padded peeps were my first concert.

Hey, the 2nd show I saw was Depeche Mode & OMD but everyone should have a couple funny ones in their memory…hell, I had to take my very awesome male friend to see the Backstreet Boys for his b-day and my little sister to Hansen back in the day.  This ain’t nothin’ compared to that love.

I think it’s a love or a hate thing – no one I know is without an opinion on the songs of Cat Stevens.  Hey baby I’m a lover.

Grew up with Cat Stevens.  I remember when we were sampling churches as a kid, the Methodist church was the most convincing to me because early on Easter morning, we walked down to the park for an outdoor service and sang Morning Has Broken.  Probably the closest I’ve ever been to religion, haha, but that’s another story.

Anyhoo, when I was in high school I had a couple of hippie friends who embraced his albums as well and that was awesome.  I may have been dressed in black and writing poetry, but I loved (and still love) to mellow out and get all daydreamy to Wild World.

I admit it, there ain’t nothin’ better than great hip hop when you’re riding bikes. Remember, I’m not a cyclist.  I ride my bike and get from Point A to Point B.  And with the iPod keeping me going, one of my favorites is Too Short…

And whether you like it or not, the lyrics are rad.  Now, turn up them speakers and try not to move.  Try not to nod your head.  Try not to move that booty.

Now let me holler at ya partner, spit this game
in you ear for a minute, quit complaining

Tuesday Guilty Pleasure

Ooh, it’s a new column in EcoGrrl universe…the Tuesday Guilty Pleasure

I’ll share mine, and maybe you’ll share one of yours in the comments?

As I was having an IM throwdown with my homeboy E earlier today about what bands drive me nuts, I thought I’d start with music.

I don’t care whatcha say…if you didn’t know it was her you’d say, “dang, this is a cool summer song!”  As for me, I’ll flaunt the flag – I love listening to Stars are Blind when I’m riding my bike down the city streets.

Ladies and gentlemen…Paris Hilton.
