Weekend in Pictures

nothing like your friend swooping you away with her girls to head out to the beach for a day of just bein’ bums.  nothing like sunshine on your shoulders and arms as you pick sunflower seeds out of a giant head of a flower that drooped seven feet high at it’s best. nothing like those days when you feel the end of summer and, no matter how much you complained of the heat, bask in the warmth and wish for a few more moments of bliss.

my weekend…as weekends should be…
(yes, i’m getting better at balance)

a slow start to canning, but the jams and relishes and cherries are done and the tomato sauces are fully underway. got some salsa & ketchup recipes to think about makin’ now :)

i love how the bees get all high off the sunflower nectar, how the sun hits the flowers in the morning, and what they do to make people smile :)

already starting in on my 2nd sockeye salmon fillet from the share I bought a couple weeks ago – marinade it in ginger and soy and olive oil, then grill, then pop on a bed of spinach, grape tomatoes from the garden, and a homemade mustard vinaigrette? mwah! perfect!

headin’ to gearhart for a day of lazy beach time with two good girls and one badass grrl :)

love what leads us up to the beach…and that patch o blue that teased us randomly that afternoon…

i always get centered at the ocean…clean salty air, barefeet on wet sand, dreamy ‘scapes like this…

what i can stare at for hours…

some awesome finds on my walk :)

looking up at the dunes as the sun hit them in a rare moment… love those sea grasses…

(bliss)

well let’s just say that some of us are cold blooded, some of us are warm blooded, hahaha

a lovely saturday, a lovely quiet beach, i left happy and mellow and ready for a nice long nap :)

came home to find one of the feral kitties chillin’ in my back yard… oy vey…

and the sky lookin’ like somethin’ awesome

so i sat out on my front porch while the light fell on me nicely and enjoyed the meditative state of de-seeding this giant sunflower head. amazes me constantly how many seeds ONE makes! i give most of the heads to my neighbor for their chickens to gorge on, but saved this one for me  - next year’s seeds & maybe some crunchies to enjoy as well!

while seeding the sunflower, i heard music and cheering, and this went by…a wedding procession / parade….sweet, community, happy :)

as the tomatoes continue to ripen, two samples of what I focused on – yellow tomato basil jam, and salsa that also includes my onions and hot peppers, mmm!

(Long) Weekend in Pictures

Ah dearies my brain’s a wee bit fried but I am happy to say I took *most* of this weekend off with the rest of the world, minus one phone interview and a few quick email check-in’s (not bad for a self employed grrl still meandering through that thing called balance).

The brunt of the last week involved preparing and then enduring the oh-so-fun project of having my roof replaced.  Not a simple layer, but a full-on, tear-off, discover-a-fifth-layer-and-a-ton-of-water-damage-requiring repair type of job.  The kind that made me sigh in relief that I just got paid from a client because, as those know who’ve had this kind of work done, overages are a bitch.

BUT honestly?  I’m so relieved (and grateful for the financial resources) that it’s almost done – they come back tomorrow to finish the shingles – as it was literally TONS of old nasty roofing that had to come down, and now my house is going to be SO much happier with all that weight off of it, not to mention I’ll finally be protected from the elements.

So, with that, here’s a view from the EcoGrrl world these past few days…

takin’ all FIVE layers off my roof to make room for a new one (we thought there were “only” four…cha-ching!)

kind of funny to see how tiny my garden looks! (yes, i got up on the ladder to get a look at everything)

yum, years of water damage (cha-ching!)

can i hear a collective gasp as we look at my backyard after day one? here’s one cool thing though: ALL of the old shingles & other debris gets recycled (ground up and used for roads) – coolness!!

the inside of my home is a mess as well! actually, it’s my renter’s room downstairs. yikes.  going solo again in october, just before my honey gets here :)

on an awesome note, yay for more tomatoes! i made a new version of my marinara, this time soaking cloves, peppercorn, and cinnamon sticks in the brew for 2 hours before canning them….mmm tasty!

I also made my first ever batch of granola! This concoction is made from oats, pumpkin seeds, almonds, dried bing cherries, tamari sunflower seeds, tasmanian honey, vanilla, and cinnamon. another MMM.

picked up a can of Metro’s recycled paint to put a nice new coat on my front porch – only $11.99 and as eco-friendly as you can possibly get!

My cucumbers have all come in about this size.  It was a stressful summer, poor things.  Good, but hmm.

escaped the normal places for vegan breakfast this morning at Vita Cafe, where I had the fairly tasty Thai Corn Cake (w/ cilantro, bananas, ginger + coconut syrup on the side for good measure).

Weekend in Pictures

This weekend’s greatest moments involved three things:  salmon, sunshine, and sauce.  So, in keeping it simple…

22 lbs of wild Alaskan salmon – via my annual CSA share from Iliamna Fish Co. Marinated some tonight with soy sauce and ginger and grilled over the bbq, over a bed of quinoa and yellow grape tomatoes…perfect.

a li’l latin music  & dancing in front of Good Neighbor Pizzeria around the corner from my house? perfect accompaniment on a sunny saturday afternoon.

YUM – the year’s first batch of marinara simmering with my very own tomatoes, garlic, red pepper & onions.  it’s one of my favorites for canning (recipe by giada de laurentiis - i sub sweet tolles peppers for celery)

There were other things, like cinnamon french toast with a friend & business partner, and climbing under my deck to pull out an evil ailanthus trying to get started, and my duran duran workout at the gym…but here are a few shots i snapped along the way this lovely, lovely weekend (did i say lovely?  77 degrees today. lovely).

my siamese donut shaped tomato – not what i envisioned heirloom to look like, hahahaha

i am loving the harvesting of dry scarlet runner beans right off the vine – how pretty they are and how easy they are to shell – even while watching tv!

this sunday morning was spent, for a change, over at barista with a beautiful cappuccino and ham & cheese croissant – and of course, my beloved journal

the toothy smirk that i adore :)

checking out India Fest with friends downtown – beautiful, musical, colorful, and delicious!

beautiful silly girls on a sunday afternoon :-)

my friend getting a gorgeous henna tattoo

Weekend in Pictures

lovely at the start , icky hot at the end.  hit up the island, new tenant arrived this weekend from berkeley, i sweat my arse off in the kitchen (canning, baby), and i learned, twice, of the gigantor raccoon living in my laurel bushes that fears, well, no one.  watching my peppers deal with this heat so poorly and seeing early stage blossom end rot on some of my tomatoes is giving me GA – Garden Anxiety.  but at the end of it all, plane tickets were bought by my fella for a nice long visit this fall and i couldn’t be happier.  that’s what it’s all about, y’all.

i love great art on the sides of buildings, even if it’s advertising…this is on NW 23rd…and I can’t wait for them to open later this month!

gyros for lunch at Blue Olive…fulfilling a craving :)

escaped town via ZipCar to head over to Sauvie Island to hit up the Pumpkin Patch for 50 lbs of local peaches, a flat of fresh blackberries, and more…but this vista made me stop and sigh happily…

dropped off the ZipCar and this dude was awaiting me with a grin :)

mellowing out on the patio of Tin Shed with a cider and the jalapeno/cherry quesadillas. perfect.

madly in love with this along Alberta St…

completely loving this local chive & black pepper cheese from Willamette Valley Cheese Co.

I’m not much of a basket collector but this shallow one was so beautiful and happen to be handmade in Uganda by a tribe visited by some Oregon folks who were teaching them sustainable gardening methods (nice trade!)

um, so this is my tomato land at eye level. wowza.

Most of them are still green and a couple bushes I’m a bit manic over as there’s blossom end rot in ‘em, but this Russian Black one (nope, not black…) was so tempting that I got to eat my first tomato off the vine today. good tomatoes, happy ecogrrl.

so i always seem to pick the hottest weekend to can, haha. ginger blackberry peach jam, spiced blackberry jelly, and bourbon vanilla blackberry jam. on a side note, most of my recipes do not include sugar (or fake versions of sugar). i’d rather taste the fruit!
