let the tomato harvest begin!

It’s been an awesome, busy, crazy week. The weather doesn’t suck, not at all.  Bike rides are good, energy level is high, and the next phase of the garden is happenin’.  Tomatoes – I must devise a strategy!  Heirloom cherries, Russian blacks, San Marzanos, Yellow Grapes, and lots of volunteers in the mix surprising me.  This year, it’s about sauces.  Yum.  Sauce.  Ketchup.  Salsa.  Happiness.

Anyhoo.  EcoGrrl-icious stuff this week front and center:

* New ideas in fighting BO the natural way right here.  Thanks for FiveSeed for sharing this!  I  am contemplating the ones in the metal tins as I know I’d be the one with the rash from plain baking soda!

* Good reminders on bike safety – also very helpful for those just starting out on two wheeled commuting.

* Even though I blog so much?  I still write in my journal every week, getting out the mish-mash, the brainstorming, the perrrrsonal stuff I ain’t sharin’ with y’all.  I have at least four journals around the house.  So am really diggin’ these Decomposition Books made from 100% recycled paper AND made in the USA.  Because if it’s made in China?  Who gives a crap if it’s recycled as your carbon footprint has just been screwed (remember that when you buy “green”!).

* I just bought one of Obsidian Wind Chimes‘ pretty chimes made here in Portland, with materials collected in nature – so gorgeous to the eye, and the ear…

* How to turn a phone booth into a library?  Really? AWESOME.  I love the things I read on Treehugger.com!

* The Always-Kick-Ass Hillary Clinton “doesn’t care what you think about her outfit.”  Fuck yeah!  This is why I voted for her.  Replace Biden with her, pleeeeease?  I love you Joe but we need Hillary.  More reasons why?  HERE.

* Finally? “ The Book is the Thing!!”  I just read how the town of Hay-on-Wye is a KINDLE-FREE TOWN!  Hell yeah! Boys and girls, e-readers are NOT sustainable! Per the NY Times, ”One e-reader requires the extraction of 33 pounds of minerals. That includes trace amounts of exotic metals like columbite-tantalite, often mined in war-torn regions of Africa…An e-reader also requires 79 gallons of water, uses 100 kilowatt hours of fossil fuels and results in 66 pounds of carbon dioxide. For a single book, it’s just two kilowatt hours, and 100 times fewer greenhouse gases.” (source)  A new book requires just 2 gallons of water in comparison.  A library or used book?  Green as can be (and cheaper too).  Bada-bing.
